Forum Post: RE: Power drain on CC2540DK Mini with accelerometer and notifications enabled

Hi Aslak,

Thanks very much for your swift response. Basically I want to put my chip into a washing machine (inside an appropriately designed waterproof case) and then detect when the washing machine is on and tell this information to a smartphone app. Naturally it is assumed that people will enter and leave the range of the bluetooth chip, so it will need to store information on whether the washing machine is on or not.

Whilst I have no doubt it is not recommended to put a bluetooth chip inside a high temperature, wet, rotating metal box, in your opinion will the chip be able to withstand those kind of conditions for a significant period of time? Not indefinietely, but for a while.

Also, time is limited, and I want to keep things as simple as possible. My hope is to reprogram the CC2540DK (presumably with IAR Workbench) to store the values from the accelerometer, and then when the phone is in range output all of these values. The phone can then work out if the washing machine is on or off, and print a nice graph of the intensity of the spinning. Is this feasible? Is it possible to implement an internal buffer simply by reprogramming the hex files?

An alternative that I can think of is that I reprogram the CC2540DK to detect when the washing machine is on. This will be simple: If rotation is detected, washing machine is on. If no rotation is detected for a few minutes (to take into account when the washing machine is idle during the cycle), the washing machine is off. The smartphone can then read this attribute directly. Simpler but gives less information.

Finally, given these scenarios, could you possibly give me a ballpark estimate of how long the battery on the CC2540DK might last? I just mean like hours, days, weeks, hopefully months?

Many thanks for all your help,

Ben
