Going through all the examples of the peripheral, central, NWP and being able to manipulate and control all the GATT functions with BTool, Packet Sniffer and HCI Tester is the where you should begin. Once you have done that you will realize that they were trying to implement in code what they could test and observe using the BLE Tools.
It has taken most people a good part of a year to understand just what is found in the 2000 pages of the Bluetooth v4.0 Guide. Mastering the GATT and GAP sections should take precedence over bit rate because in the end, you can only send so much data so fast.
