Thanks for pointing us to the sloa168 app note, it helped to partly understand what was happening.
Changing the registers as stated in the app note did not seem to solve the issue, we did not spend much thought. After a couple of unsuccessfull tries we reverted the modifications we previously made to the EVM with the intention of checking the chip was not damaged. We could check it was ok as it was working as expected with the original firmware (in the TI MSP CPU).
Being then sure it is simply a matter of registers configuration we modified the board again and plugged it into our MCU expansion connectors... magic happends, it works.
I think this originated in some tests I was doing regarding some notes included in sloa159, possibly related to the one entitled "7.7 SPI With SS Pin Only – Single Byte Direct Commands", perhaps I sent something wrong. But I'm not 100% sure, I was testing several things at the same time.
