It is fully possible to have good data and bad CRC if the bit errors are in the CRC bytes and not in the data bytes. The wrong RSSI might be due to saturation. What you should do is to input a signal of a known strength and then read the RSSI. You should then step up the TX power in steps of 1-2 dB and continuously read the RSSI register to see at what level the RSSI saturates.
