Forum Post: RE: CC3000 matching elements dimensioning

And, I'm confused as to why we need the 10pF C2 close to the module on the CC3000EM schematic.  The Johanson matching circuit only shows a single C/L combination to achieve 50 ohms.  Assuming the CC300 is 50 ohms, it seems we shouldn't need any other components.

Further, the CC3000EM layout uses a lot of pcb space that I would prefer to eliminate so my pcb can be as small as possible.  I do not plan to use the RF connector option.  If I drop that connector, is there any issue with shortening the 50 ohm trace from module to antenna and moving the module closer to the antenna for better component packing?  It seems like as long as the same matching components are used and the trace impedance is held to 50 ohm, then any arbitrary trace length and component layout should work -- or are there fringe metallic effects from the module's metal case that requires the exact spacing and orientation of the EM board to achieve the same FCC results?

As one example of a preferred layout, why couldn't the entire RF path stay straight as shown in the Johanson drawing?  (with the feeding line much shorter than shown)

Thanks, Chris
