Thanks for the response.  I've been through the datasheet and wiki - hence my question.  In my opinion, it's not clear from either.

The diagram implies it is for IO levelling but this is not clear. I think perhaps VBAT is a bad name choice and the pin description for VIO_HOST could be better in the data sheet.

So in my case (and probably the common case), since VIO_HOST = VBAT = 3.3V I can tie VBAT to VIO_HOST.
